WORLD NEWS, 1 December - IP "TURKMENinform". The International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea Executive Directorate four-day sitting of the five Central Asian states representatives started today in Almaty (Kazakhstan). The agenda of the sitting includes questions on the Aral Sea shrinking prevention, saving and maintaining its unique ecological balance, problems of water management and security in the Central Asia region, renewability of water resources, climate change, etc. Turkmenistan is represented by Annageldy Yazmyradov, minister of water industry of Turkmenistan.
The International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) was established in 1993 on the part of the five Central Asian republics in order to fund and credit joint regional environmental and research programmes and projects aimed at saving the Aral Sea and improving the environmental situation in the area which also affects the Dashoguz velayat of Turkmenistan. The targeted measures elaborated by the IFAS Executive Directorate are implemented in domestic policies of the member-countries and strengthen and expand cooperation between the Central Asian states. In order to promote the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea cause on the international scene the fund was given the status of the UN institution.
